The activity combines light physical exercise, time outdoors, and social interaction in a structured yet informal setting.

The sessions are accessible (drop-in format), inclusive (no prior experience required), and low-pressure (short, defined time window). The emphasis is on mutual benefit: improving the garden while supporting individual physical health, mental clarity, and social connection. He was sworn-in as Minister of Education, Culture and Science of the Netherlands by King Willem-Alexander on January 10, 2022. He becomes President of the International Science Council in January 2027.

A prominent mathematical physicist, Dijkgraaf is an impassioned and eloquent advocate for pure scientific inquiry and the vital importance of encouraging creativity, imagination, and “out of the box” thinking. He offers a truly international perspective on science and policy having served as President (2014–17) of the InterAcademy Partnership, a consortium of more than 130 of the world’s national science academies, and Co-Chair (2009–17) of the InterAcademy Council, the global alliance of science academies advising the United Nations, the World Bank, and other international organizations.

Considered the voice of science in his native Netherlands, where he served as President of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences from 2008–12, Dijkgraaf is a best-selling author of books for a general audience, appears frequently on television—including annual live events that attract more than a million viewers—and writes monthly for the Netherlands’ top newspaper, NRC Handelsblad. A trained visual artist, a skilled moderator, and a dynamic spokesperson, Dijkgraaf is equally comfortable describing the wonders of nature and the connections between humanities and science as he is articulating issues of societal import.

Dijkgraaf is the author of The Usefulness of Useless Knowledge, published in 2017 by Princeton University Press, in which he and founding Director Abraham Flexner articulate how essential basic research and original thinking are to innovation and societal progress, a belief that has informed the mission of the Institute for nearly ninety years..

As a scientist, Dijkgraaf has made significant contributions to string theory. His research focuses on the interface between mathematics and particle physics. In addition to finding surprising and deep connections between matrix models, topological string theory, and supersymmetric quantum field theory, Dijkgraaf has developed precise formulas for the counting of bound states that explain the entropy of certain black holes. For his contributions to science, Dijkgraaf was awarded the Spinoza Prize, the highest scientific award in the Netherlands, in 2003. He was named a Knight of the Order of the Netherlands Lion in 2012. Dijkgraaf has been conferred honorary doctorates from Leiden University, Vrije Universiteit Brussel, and Radboud University Nijmegen and is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the American Philosophical Society, and the Royal Flemish Academy of Belgium for Science and the Arts.

<a10:updated>2026-09-10T15:46:17+01:00</a10:updated>

The Library and Chattels of The Honourable Society of Lincoln's Inn (18/11/2026, 16:00)

NINE (9) Member places are available. Stored at the City of London Corporation-owned The London Archives, the Charter was given to the City of London by King William I in 1067, shortly after the Battle of Hastings, but before he entered the City. Measuring just six inches by one-and-a-half inches, it was written on vellum (parchment) in Old English.

The Charter bears one of the earliest surviving seals from William the Conqueror’s reign and is the earliest known royal or imperial document to guarantee the collective rights of the inhabitants of any town, granting nothing new to Londoners, but confirming the citizens' rights and privileges, which were already in existence. Translated into modern English, the Charter reads:

“William King greets William the Bishop and Geoffrey the Portreeve and all the citizens in London, French and English, in friendly fashion; and I inform you that it is my will that your laws and customs be preserved as they were in King Edward’s day; that every son shall be his father’s heir after his father’s death; and that I will not that any man do wrong to you. God yield you.”

Alongside the Charter will be a small display of items from the Museum’s collections and loans, including an illustrated manuscript from The Bodleian Libraries at the University of Oxford and the Chew Valley hoard of silver pennies of Harold II and William I.

Chair of the City of London Corporation’s Culture, Heritage, and Libraries Committee, Brendan Barns, said:

“What this remarkable, 969-year-old document lacks in size, it more than makes up for in its historical significance and importance to the history of the City of London Corporation and more widely, to our understanding of life and being ruled in 11th-century England. Taking its place within a small and exclusive list of items, the William Charter’s inclusion in this landmark exhibition will help provide a compelling parallel with the Bayeux Tapestry.”

The Bayeux Tapestry opens at the British Museum on 10 September and is being hailed as its return to England for the first time since it was created nearly 1,000 years ago.

The City of London Corporation, which owns The London Archives, is one of the largest funders of heritage and cultural activities in the UK and invests over £145m every year. The organisation manages a range of world-class cultural and heritage institutions, including the Barbican Centre, Tower Bridge, Guildhall School of Music & Drama, Guildhall Library, Guildhall Art Gallery, The London Archives, and Keats House. It also supports the London Symphony Orchestra and London Museum, which will open on 28 November.7

<a10:updated>2026-08-22T10:31:44+01:00</a10:updated>

College Period of Welcome and Orientation Begins (14/09/2026, 09:00)

<a10:updated>2026-08-22T10:29:23+01:00</a10:updated>

Argyris Dean's Colloquium on Wordsworth- The Rt Hon The Lord Smith of Islington, The Chancellor of The University of Cambridge (17/03/2027, 17:00)

The Dean will host a Colloquium on the English poet William Wordsworth at the historic Wordsworth Museum, Dove Cottage in Grasmere.
Speaker - Professor Susannah Maidment

The Middle Jurassic was a pivotal period in dinosaur evolution, yet it remains one of the least understood chapters in dinosaur history due to the scarcity of fossils from the period. Recent discoveries from Morocco's El Mers III Formation, including North Africa's first stegosaur, Africa's first and the world's oldest discovered ankylosaur, and a newly excavated partial ankylosaur skeleton with an unprecedented body plan, are transforming our understanding of this enigmatic period while revealing one of the best-preserved Middle Jurassic terrestrial ecosystems on Earth.

This talk will explore these remarkable discoveries, the challenges of conducting palaeontological fieldwork in Morocco, and our efforts to build local research capacity and protect the region's fossil heritage.

<a10:updated>2026-08-04T13:41:27+01:00</a10:updated>

Founders' Day- The Proclamation of New Fellows, Michaelmas Term Begins in College (05/10/2026, 17:00)

Today at 5pm in the LH Quad the new College Fellows are proclaimed.
A community-led volunteering initiative invites local residents to participate in monthly gardening sessions at Brunswick Square. The activity combines light physical exercise, time outdoors, and social interaction in a structured yet informal setting. Participants engage in tasks such as planting, tidying, and maintaining shared green space, contributing to both environmental quality and personal wellbeing.

The sessions are accessible (drop-in format), inclusive (no prior experience required), and low-pressure (short, defined time window). The emphasis is on mutual benefit: improving the garden while supporting individual physical health, mental clarity, and social connection.
The sessions are accessible (drop-in format), inclusive (no prior experience required), and low-pressure (short, defined time window). The emphasis is on mutual benefit: improving the garden while supporting individual physical health, mental clarity, and social connection. Practical guidance (e.g., bringing gloves) ensures ease of participation, while community contact details provide continuity and engagement beyond a single session.
